Livâs face was red and swollen when she greeted us at the entrance to the Blue Moon. She opened the door the moment we pulled up and rushed down the walkway to meet us. A police car was parked outside and from the amount of snow on its windows, it had been there a while.
âThatâs my dadâs car,â Hunter said after he pulled off his snow-crusted ski mask. He stomped on the mat with his boots and rubbed his hands together in an effort to get warm. If the numbness in my own hands was any indication, it was going to take a while. When Livâs gaze fell on his shotgun he took it off and laid it against the wall. I did the same, half expecting her to ask us why weâd brought them.
She didnât ask. I almost wished she would. Somehow her acceptance of the danger made it worse.
âYour father came as soon as I called,â Liv said to Hunter, hugging herself to stop the shaking. âHeâs upstairs in Annieâs room. There was another guy, too, but he had to leave. I think there was a car accident.â Tears spilled down her cheeks and she swiped at them with the back of her hand.
âWe should get back upstairs,â Gavin said, taking hold of Livâs elbow and guiding her toward the stairs that led to their apartment.
âI want to go look for her,â Liv said, resisting his effort to nudge her forward. âSheâs out there all alone. And sheâs scared. Sheâs really scared. I can feel it.â She place her fist over her heart and looked at me, her face a mask of grief. âI swear to God I can feel it.â
âI can feel it too, Liv,â Gavin said quietly. Though he wasnât as visibly upset as his wife, his composure seemed as fragile as hers was. Probably the only reason he hadnât broken down was that he was trying to be strong for Liv. âBut thereâs no point walking out into a blizzard when we donât even know where to look. Maybe Kira can help us.â
The butterflies in my stomach felt as if they were multiplying at the speed of light. Funny that Iâd spent so much of life wishing I wouldnât see the future and now I was terrified I might not be able to do that. I shoved my ski mask into my jacket pocket, along with my gloves. âIâll give it my best shot,â I said, mounting the first step. âBut I canât promise anything. My visions areâwell, letâs just say I canât control them. I donât know when theyâll happen or if theyâll happen at all.â
âBut you saw Annie before,â Liv said. âYou said youâd been dreaming of her for weeks.â
âShe has,â Hunter said from behind me. âBut even Kiraâs not sure what her dreams mean. They keep changing on her, like a moving target.â
Bad choice of simile, I thought, wincing inwardly. âIâll do my best,â I said, reaching the top stair and stepping up into the apartment.
